The Brief History Of Nollywood

The term “Nollywood,” which is a combination of the words “Nigeria” and “Hollywood,” was first used to describe the Nigerian film business.

An article in The New York Times is where the word first appeared in the early 2000s. The word has been the focus of numerous controversies because there is no precise or generally accepted definition for it due to the history of changing meanings and contexts.

The phrase “Nollywood” has no clear definition, but Jonathan Haynes found that it was first used in a 2002 New York Times article by Matt Steinglass to characterise Nigerian cinema

Norimitsu Onishi used the name in a September 2002 New York Times story, as Charles Igwe pointed out.

It was later believed that the term’s meaning was a portmanteau of the words “Nigeria” and “Hollywood,” the important American film hub. The term is still used in the media to refer to the Nigerian film industry.

a list of highly esteemed films Nollywood has always been a topic of discussion. The entirety of the Nigerian film business, whether it be in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Itsekiri, Edo, Efik, Ijaw, Urhobo, or any other of the more than 300 Nigerian languages, is referred to as Nollywood by Alex Eyengho.

According to him, the development of Nollywood “began with the theatrical (stage) and cinematic (celluloid) efforts of the likes of Chief Hubert Ogunde, Chief Amata, Baba Sala, Ade Love, Eddie Ugbomah, and a few others, since the pre and post independent Nigeria”

Other affiliated film industries, whose movies are typically co-produced with Nigeria and/or released by Nigerian businesses, have also been referred to as “Nollywood” over the years.

The phrase has also been applied to Nigerian/African diaspora pictures that are thought to be connected to Nigeria or created especially for the Nigerian market.

The exact criteria that must be met for a movie to be classified as Nollywood are unclear.

Some participants have consistently voiced their opposition to the word, citing factors like the fact that it was coined by a foreigner and is therefore another example of imperialism.

Additionally, it has been claimed that the term is not an original and distinctively African identity, but rather a copy of something that already existed (Hollywood).
