How Murtala Nyako Started His Early Life

On August 27, 1943, Murtala Hamman-Yero Nyako was born in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.

His father, Alhaji Hamman-Yero was a well-known merchant and produce buying agent and it was because of his business dealings that John Holts and Sons Ltd.’s center in Mayo-Belwa came to be.

Nyako was an officer cadet when he enlisted in the Royal Nigerian Navy in June 1963.

He began his officer training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England, in September 1963.

In September 1965, he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant. In September 1965, he finished his initial naval training.

Nyako returned to Nigeria in October 1966 and remained there until September 1993, serving in the Nigerian Navy.

He had several on-board and shore appointments throughout that time.
He once served as the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy’s first missile-carrying ship, a landing craft, and a patrol craft.
