Early Life and Education
Joke Silva was born to Chief Emmanuel Afolabi Silva, a prominent lawyer, and his wife, Dr. Marianne Silva, a medical doctor. She grew up in Lagos State, Nigeria, and attended Holy Child College in Lagos for her secondary education.
Silva went on to study English at the University of Lagos, where she graduated with a 2nd class upper degree. Afterward, she proceeded to Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she honed her acting skills.
Joke Silva started her career as a theater actress in the early 1980s when she joined the Awada Kerikeri Group led by Olu Jacobs. Her first major stage performance was in the play “Jero’s Metamorphosis” by Wole Soyinka.
She made her film debut in the 1990 movie, “Mind Bending,” directed by Greg McCjuneor and went on to feature in several Nollywood movies such as “The Secret Laughter of Women,” “Letters to a Stranger,” “30 Days,” and “Phone Swap,” among others.
Silva is also a television personality, having acted in TV series such as “Tinsel,” “The Amazing Grace,” and “Hush.” She has also lent her voice to the animation movie “The Lion King” in the Nigerian pidgin English adaptation.
In addition to acting, Joke Silva is also an accomplished theater director, producer, and acting coach. She is the co-founder and Managing Director of Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts (LAPA), a leading performing arts school in Lagos State.
