He later served as the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture in Lagos State from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, he was appointed as the Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, where he served until 2015.
After his tenure as the Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro returned to Nigeria and contested for the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015. He won the election and was subsequently appointed as the Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning. He was re-elected in 2019 and currently serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure.
