Early Life and Education

I.K. Dairo was born into a family of musicians. His father, Joseph Adisa Dairo, was a drummer and a bandleader who played yoruba music. His family moved around a lot when he was a child, so he attended several schools, including St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic School in Ilorin and Offa Primary School. He also briefly studied at the Baptist Boys’ High School in Lagos but dropped out in 1949 to pursue music full-time.

Career Beginnings

Dairo began his music career as a member of his father’s band. He later formed his band called The Morning Star Orchestra in 1957, which was famous for its energetic and danceable music. He fused traditional yoruba rhythms with western musical instruments like the guitar, harmonica, and the trumpet to create his unique style of juju music. He achieved national success with his hit songs “I Remember” and “Mo Sorire,” which were recorded in 1957.
