Fabio Alexandre da Silva Coentrao, popularly known as Fabio Coentrao, is a retired Portuguese footballer who played as a left-back. Born on March 11, 1988, in Vila do Conde, Portugal, Coentrao started his football career as a youngster with the local football club, Rio Ave FC, before moving on to join the youth academy of Benfica in 2004.
Coentrao made his professional debut for Benfica in 2007, where he played as a left-winger. He was later converted to a left-back by the then Benfica manager Jorge Jesus. His performances at Benfica earned him the Primeira Liga Player of the Month award in April 2009.
